Many poker players in online rooms seem to question players that win various hands, and more often than not, this is due to the lack of understanding of the pecking order of poker hands. The following list delineates the rank of winning hands in poker, in descending order (best hand to worst hand):

Royal Flush - This is the highest possible hand that you can have in Poker. A Royal Flush is an Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and 10, all of the same suit. For example, a Royal Flush Hand might be: Ace of Diamonds, King of Diamonds, Queen of Diamonds, Jack of Diamonds, and 10 of Diamonds. This hand trumps all other hands. The odds of getting this rare hand are 649,739 to 1.

Straight Flush - A Straight Flush is a hand where you have 5 cards in a sequence, all of the same suit. For example, a straight flush might be: 3 of Clubs, 4 of Clubs, 5 of Clubs, 6 of Clubs and 7 of Clubs. If there is more than 1 straight Flush in a game, the player with the highest card in the straight flush wins the hand. The odds of getting this hand are approximately 72,192 to 1.

Four-of-a-Kind - A Four-of-a-Kind hand means that 4 of the 5 cards have the same face value or number. For example, a four-of-a-kind-hand might be: 3 of Clubs, Jack of Spades, Jack of Clubs, Jack of Diamonds, and Jack of Hearts. If there are more than one Four-of-a-Kind hands in a game, then the player with the higher card (in the foursome) wins the hand. The odds of getting this hand are 4,164 to 1.

Full House - A Full House consists of 3 cards of one face value or number and 2 other cards of the same face value or number. For example, a Full House hand might be: 10 of Diamonds, 10 of Clubs, 10 of Hearts, 4 of Spades, and 4 of Hearts. If more than one hand has a Full House in a game, then the hand with the highest ranking of 3-of-a-kind, wins. The odds of getting this hand are approximately 693 to 1.

Flush - A Flush is a hand that has 5 cards of identical suit. For example, a flush might be: 3 of Spades, 5 of Spades, 9 of Spades, Jack of Spades, and Ace of Spades. If there is more than one hand with a flush in a game, then the flush that has the highest card wins. The odds of getting this hand are approximately 508 to 1.

Straight - A Straight is 5 cards in order sequence, where any of these cards can be a member of any of the four suits. For example, a straight might be: 5 of Clubs, 6 of Diamonds, 7 of Diamonds, 8 of Hearts, and 9 of Clubs. In a straight, an Ace can be treated as a low card (for example, A, 2, 3, 4, 5) or as a high card (for example, 10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace). In the event that more than one hand has a straight, the player with the highest card in their straight wins. The odds of getting this hand are approximately 254 to 1.

Three-of-a-Kind - A Three-of-a-kind hand consists of 3 cards of the same face value or number. For example, a three-of-a-kind hand might be: Jack of Spades, 3 of Diamonds, 7 of Hearts, 7 of Clubs, and 7 of Diamonds. In the event of more than one hand having a three-of-a-kind in a game, the player with the highest card in the threesome wins. The odds of getting this hand are approximately 46 to 1.

Two Pairs - Two pairs is a hand that consists of 2 groups of 2 cards of the same face value or number. For example, a two-pairs hand might be: Jack of Diamonds, Jack of Clubs, 7 of Hearts, 8 of Diamonds, and 8 of Spades. If more than one two-pairs hands exist for a particular game, then the hand with the highest pair wins. In this scenario, if more than one player has identical high pair cards, then the player with the highest 2nd pair cards wins. Again, in this scenario, if both pairs of hands are the same, then the 5th card, known as the “kicker”, decides who wins (highest kicker card wins in this case). The odds of getting this hand are approximately 20 to 1.

One Pair - A one-pair hand consists of 2 cards of the same face value or number. For example, a one-pair hand might be: Ace of Diamonds, 7 of Hearts, 6 of Clubs, 3 of Diamonds, and 3 of Spades. If more than one player has an identical one-pair hand, then the highest card, outside of the pair, wins the hand. The odds of getting this hand are approximately 2.36 to 1.

High Card - This is the lowest possible hand in poker. For example, a high-card hand might be: Ace of Spades, 7 of Diamonds, 6 of Hearts, Jack of Clubs, and 9 of Diamonds. If multiple hands are high-card hands, then the hand that has the highest card wins.
