Texas Holdem is a one of many different forms of poker games being played today. It is played with each player receiving two cards. Then a series of community cards are place for each player to share. The player with the best 5 cards between the two in their hand and the five on the board, wins!
Depending on where you decide to play, the number of players at one table may vary but most games have between nine and ten players. Each player chooses his or her seat and buys the appropriate amount of chips. The dealer places the ‘button’ on a selected player. The button is moved one seat to the left (clockwise) each time a new hand is started.
Once the dealer button is in place, the first seat to the left posts up the small blind and the next seat posts the big blind. These are forced bets. The amount of the blinds will depend on the limit of the poker game that you are playing in.
The dealer then deals out two cards to each player. The player to the immediate left of the big blind is now first to act. This player has the option to call, raise, or fold. Once his or her decision is made, each player around the table will have the opportunity to do the same when their turn comes. Once the action has returned to the big blind, this player has the ‘option’ to check or raise. This will continue around the table until all player with cards have called the maximum bet at the table.
Next is the flop. A card is burnt (discarded) and three cards are placed faced up on the table. These are called community cards. Another round of betting occurs and players have the option to check, bet, raise or fold. Once this round of betting is complete, another card is burnt and another card is placed face up on the table. This card is referred to as the ‘turn’. Once again, another round of betting takes place. Once this is complete, another card is burnt and one last card is placed face up on the table. This card is referred to as the ‘river’ card. Another round of betting occurs. Once this round of betting is complete, the remaining players will turn their cards face up to show the best five card poker hand. The player with the best possible five card combination wins the hand and takes down the pot.
